The List
-
[ ] Have you installed Zoom on your device?
If not, visit Step 1.2 (←or click here) in section 1 of this guide.
-
[ ] Do you know how to join an event?
If not, visit Step 1.3 (←or click here) in section 1 of this guide.
-
[ ] Have you joined a practice event to check your setup and try the in-event controls?
If not, visit Step 1.4 (←or click here) in section 1 of this guide.
-
[ ] Do you have the latest joining credentials to hand?
To join a Zoom event, you will need either:
- a special link that looks something like this:
https://zoom.us/j/123456789
, OR
- a meeting ID - a 9, 10 or 11-digit number (corresponds to the numbers on the end of the link above).
Check your ticket, the event listing online (e.g. Meetup, Facebook, etc.) or emails pertaining to the event for this information.
<aside>
⚠️ WARNING! Whilst uncommon, joining credentials sometimes change at the last minute. If they do, the old credentials will no longer work. The event listing online should hold the latest information. If in doubt, consult your event host. ****

- [ ] Does your device have a strong, stable internet connection?
Without this, you may experience patchy audio and freezing video. You may lose touch with other participants, or lose your connection to the event altogether. You can do a wifi speed test by clicking here (speedtest.net). You'll need your download and upload speeds to each exceed about 1.8Mbps for a good experience.
- [ ] Are you using mobile data? (tablets and smartphones only)
Unless you are familiar with your mobile data plan and typical usage for video calls, we strongly recommend connecting to WiFi on tablets and smartphones.
- [ ] How does your battery look?
If possible, connect your device to its charger for the duration of your event. Otherwise, make sure it has ample charge. We don't want to lose you halfway through!
- [ ] Will we be able to hear you?
Make sure you're situated in a place with as little background noise and as few audible interruptions as possible.
- [ ] Will we be able to see you?
Make sure you are situated somewhere with a light source in front of you, illuminating your face. Moody silhouettes in front of windows might be cool, but they aren't very friendly.
- [ ] Are you comfortable?
Find yourself a good chair with back support. You'll thank us later.
You're ready for action! 🎬
It's time to join. If you've forgotten how to do this, go back to Step 1.3 (←click here to head straight there). There's nothing stopping you from joining the Waiting Room early. It'll give you time to get yourself a hot cuppa while you wait to start.
